Fireboards were essential in homes of the past. When the fireplace was not in use they were used to reflect the warmth of the room and keep drafts from coming from the chimney by placing the board over the opening and filling that emptiness with color and design. When the fireplace is in use, the fireboard was moved to the side of the hearth as a decorative accent.
